Overview

UCN communications areconsistent with the growth anddirection of evolving internationalstandards, with appropriateHoneywell extensions for secureprocess control applications.The UCN uses redundant coaxialcables and can support up to 32redundant devices. The UCNsupports peer-to-peercommunication between deviceson this network. This featureenables sharing information amongHPMs, APMs, PMs, SafetyManagers, and Logic Managers onthe network, thus offeringtremendous power and flexibility inimplementing advanced,coordinated control strategies.

The Network Interface Module(NIM) provides the link betweenthe Local Control Network and theUniversal Control Network.Accordingly, it makes the transitionfrom the transmission techniqueand protocol of the Local ControlNetwork to the transmissiontechnique and protocol of theUniversal Control Network. TheNIM provides LCN module accessto data from UCN-resident devices.It supports program and databaseloads to the Advanced ProcessManager and forwards alarms andmessages from the networkdevices to the LCN. The NIM isalso available in a redundantconfiguration to provide automatic,continued operation in the event ofa primary failure.

The Advanced Process Manager isdesigned to provide flexible andpowerful process scanning andcontrol capabilities. To do this, ituses advanced multi-processorarchitecture with separatemicroprocessors dedicated toperform specific tasks. Asdepicted in Figure 3, the APMconsists of the Advanced ProcessManager Module (APMM) and theI/O Subsystem.
